I had no idea what this package was when the UPS man dropped it off. I was even more confused when I opened it.

“That’s nice…” I thought. But why was Sourcebooks/ Jabberwocky sending me more author copies?

Then I noticed the little red addition at the bottom of the cover…

Scholastic! A children’s author’s dream come true (at least THIS author :-) ).

Now available in the Scholastic Teen December/ Holiday sales in Canada (page 3) and the US (page 1!).

So much pretty!

I may have to revise this once I get the final covers but here are book 1 (out now!), book 2 (May 2012), and book 3 (Feb 2013) of the REAL MERMAIDS series.

Real Mermaids Don’t Wear Toe Rings is only about six weeks old but WOW! what a ride it has been so far.

Thanks, EVERYONE, for the reader e-mail, blog mentions, tweets, contests and reviews and for helping to spread the word about Jade–my chocolate-mug-cake-loving/reluctant mermaid.

Your support and enthusiasm have meant SO much!

Some of you have asked, “Will there be a sequel?!” and today, I can enthusiastically say NO!

There will not be a sequel.

   There will be TWO!!!!!!!

From today’s Publishers Marketplace:

REAL MERMAIDS DON’T WEAR TOE RINGS author Hélène Boudreau’s next two books in the Real Mermaids series, about a plus-sized, aquaphobic teenager with mermaid tendencies, again to Rebecca Frazer at Jabberwocky,  by Lauren MacLeod at The Strothman Agency (World English).

Doing a couple of virtual cannon balls and back flips over this news. Woohoo!

The Life (and Lies) of Inanimate Flying Objects: contest ends Jan 31st

The Bookologist: contest ends Feb 13th

So, there’s my news!

Two SEA-QUELS! Hooray!

Winner! Jenna! (Jennifer Clark Estes)

It started off modestly enough. I’d hold a nice little contest and give away a copy of REAL MERMAIDS DON’T WEAR TOE RINGS.

Lovely, right? … but it wouldn’ t be ENOUGH. So, then I thought, huh…maybe I’ll do a fun #hashtag contest on Twitter and give away FIVE copies.

Cool! …but what about people who aren’t on Twitter? What about all my Facebook pals?  Shouldn’t I give away a few copies over there? Maybe FIVE copies there, too?? So, okay, okay.

TEN copies of REAL MERMAIDS DON’T WEAR TOE RINGS to giveaway. You heard it, TEN!

Totally serious! Wanna win one?? Here’s how…

Tweet using the hashtag #realmermaids for a chance to win one of the FIVE twitter copies. For example:

#realmermaids don’t wear toe rings (but that one’s taken 😉 ) or I brake for #realmermaids

Funniest tweets win! Winners are totally up to the discretion of my judges @bostonbookgirl, @authoressanon, @jodimeadows, @kathleenpeacock and @elissacruz. Thank you, lovelies!

Please keep it PG, though, people! Think of the children!! :-)

Just go ahead and LIKE my page on Facebook and post in the contest thread for a chance to win one of FIVE Facebook copies. Unlike Twitter, this contest is not limited to 140 characters. You can play with the #realmermaids twitter concept or tell me a joke, or write me a poem, the sky is the limit. Just make me LAUGH! Again, the five funniest WIN!

Oh, and what the heck. Post in the comments here, too, for a chance to win. So you know what that means…ELEVEN books to give away! That’s what I’m talking about!

*Open to US/Canadian residents / Contest runs until December 5th/ Contest winners will be announced randomly over the next five days so stay tuned!

UPDATE! The fun never ends!

THREE more chances to win: Dreamscape is giving away three autographed copies of the audiobook right here:

Just LIKE their page and you’re entered to win! Audiobook contest runs until December 20th!

…and I couldn’t be happier! :-)

From The New York Journal of Books: “Ms. Boudreau writes knowingly about the political minefield of adolescent girl relationships and surging guy-crushes, and she puts Jade in quite a crucible: Trying to solve the mystery of her mother’s death, pass high school, keep her friends, win the guy—and not morph into a fish in public. The author is savvy enough to have left a few threads loose, and she has built enough conflict in the nascent mermaid world to warrant a very nice sequel. Oh, it’s never easy to be a 14-year-old girl. Bravo to Hélène Boudreau for hitting the bull’s-eye with a fresh, affectionate, watery twist on the classic coming-of-age-story.”

From Kirkus Reviews: “…the author keeps suspense high and her prose moving while tapping straight into young teens’ angst about friends, enemies and boys.”

From The YA-5: “Absolutely fresh and sweet, a quirky coming of age story.”  (and a full review where she likens my character, Jade, to Margaret. YES! Judy Blume’s Margaret. *faints*)

Real Mermaids Don’t Wear Toe Rings (book and audiobook in stores December 1st/ 2010)

I know this is probably equivalent to having my mom review my book but chicklet (who is 9) worked hard ALL day, reading the ARC of REAL MERMAIDS DON’T WEAR TOE RINGS and would like to share her thoughts. :-)

Chicklet’s review on
Real Mermaids Don’t Wear Toe Rings

Part’s I liked: “Dad are you googling this?!?!?!”

Mumma wrote it and It is funny!!! :-) :-) :-)

Parts I disliked: NONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Mumma helped me with this part… (from the back of the book):

If she hadn’t been so clueless, she might have seen it coming. But really, who expects to get into a relaxing bathtub after a stressful day of shopping for tankinis and come out with scales and a tail?

Most. Embarassing. Moment. Ever.

Jade soon discovers she inherited her mermaid tendencies from her mom. But this revelation raises a serious question: if Mom was a mermaid, how did she drown?

Jade is determined to find out. But how does a plus-sized, aqua-phobic, mer-girl go about doing that, exactly? And how will Jade ever be able to explain her secret to her best friend Cori, and her crush, Luke?

This summer is about to get a lot more interesting…

Back to me…

OUT OF 10……11

:-)’s Out of 10: :-)  :-)  :-)  :-)  :-)  :-)  :-)  :-)  :-)  :-)  :-)

TOP OF THE GUST RED AND LOVED PILE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

From: CHICKLET :-)

It’s HERE!

And it’s SO purr-ty!

And I held it for all of three minutes before one of my chicklets got a hold of it.

And now, my little girl, who is on the verge of becoming a big girl, is upstairs in her PJs cuddled up in bed reading my book.

And that is just about the happiest feeling, ever.
